— Tween Player, after an Intro Class

If your child is new to the world of Dungeons & Dragons, the rules can seem a little intimidating. What’s a Variant Human Artificer? Why are there so many spells to choose from? Why do you need seven different dice?! That’s why we offer D&D classes for beginners to help ease them into the game. We don’t want the quirks of D&D to keep your child from discovering what could be an amazing new hobby.

We created our Intro Class to help kids learn the basics before joining an ongoing group. It can be hard to explain D&D to someone who’s never played. The easiest way to see if it’s for you is to give it a try. These one-time sessions are a chill, low-pressure way to explore the game without having to worry about making mistakes or getting in over your head. In class, your child will learn how to:

  • Build a character

  • Roll dice in D&D

  • Follow basic rules of combat

  • Play on an online platform

  • Work together with other players

  • Succeed on an adventure 🙂

If you’re considering one of our tween or teen weekly games, an Intro Class is a great place to start. Your child will get to meet one of our DMs, ask any questions they might have, and get a feel for our style. They’ll have lots of support in the process—usually we have two adults on these calls, so there’s plenty of one-on-one attention as kids learn the ropes.

D&D Classes for Beginners: Designed for Kids and Teens

D&D classes for beginners

Our D&D Classes for Kids and Teens are an age-appropriate option for learning to play Dungeons & Dragons.

Our classes are designed to be kid-friendly, which means we won’t overwhelm new players with every single rule that has ever existed. Instead, we focus on what kids need to learn in order to have fun playing the game. They’ll learn how D&D works and how to use their character and actions to tell an interesting story. Our hope is that kids can build on those basics over time, once they’re involved in an ongoing game with their peers.

All our Game Masters have experience working with young people, so they know how to keep kids’ attention without getting too bogged down in the details of exactly which modifier to use on your next 20-sided dice roll. We keep our game sessions on the shorter side, so it’s easier to maintain energy and focus. All the content of our storylines has been designed with kids in mind, too. Tween players won’t encounter anything above a PG rating in our Intro Classes, and content for teen classes is PG-13 at most, making our sessions perfect for D&D classes for beginners.

Get to Know Us While Learning to Play

D&D Intro Classes are a good introduction to the game, but they also introduce us to each other! It’s a big commitment to join an weekly group. A one-time class gives your child a try us out, and see if our games are something they’d enjoy. They’ll meet at least one of our DMs, plus another member of our staff. They might even meet some of the other players who would join them in a future group.

Meeting your child in advance helps us get to know them better, too. Watching an intro game gives us a lot of information about their play style and what themes are exciting to them. It also helps us figure out what kids might mesh well together in a future campaign. The whole goal of these group is to create meaningful friendships online. We want to set kids up for success at the start by matching new players with a group that suits them.

Kids in a group don’t have to be exactly alike, but it helps if they’re on the same page about how they like to play the game. We’ll think about things like age, gender, interests, and personality when putting things together. By the end of class, we should have a good idea about next steps.

Of course, you can let us know your child’s preferences, too. What did they like most about class? Was there anything that didn’t work for them? We want your child to feel comfortable playing, and we’re always here to help.

How Our D&D Intro Classes for Kids Work

So, your child is ready to get started learning to play D&D? Awesome! Here’s some info about how our groups work and what to expect.

  • Our Intro Classes are open to kids ages 10-16. We’ll place your child in a class with kids of a similar age, to make game play easier. If your child is slightly older or younger, but you think they’d still enjoy class, drop us a line and let us know!

  • Since our games meet online, we can welcome students from anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada. We have Game Masters located in the Eastern, Central, and Pacific Time Zones, and our games are accessible for kids in Mountain Time Zone too. If you live somewhere else but have a similar schedule, we can meet with you, too!

  • Our classes are 90 minutes long. They typically include 20-30 minutes of instruction and character building, followed by 60-70 minutes of actual game play.

  • A 90-minute Intro Class costs $49. We price these classes at the same rate as our 10-week game packages.

  • Yes! If your child would like to learn more about how we run games, they’re welcome to join even if they’ve played before. They should just be prepared to take some time reviewing the basics and know they’ll be hanging out with first-time players.

  • All our classes use a private, secure Zoom room to meet. In addition, we’ll use one of two websites—Roll20 or DndBeyond—to let us do things like roll dice and manage character sheets virtually.

  • We run a few Intro Classes a quarter, when we open enrollment for our next season of weekly games. Sign up for our waiting list to be the first to hear about them.

  • Nope! They can just bring themselves (and a strong internet connection). For more detailed info about our games, check out our FAQ page.

If My Child Enjoys Intro Class, What Else Do You Offer?

So, your child is ready to get into D&D? Here’s what to do next.

An Intro Class lets your child “test drive” our D&D sessions. If they enjoy their experience, we’d love to have them join us in an ongoing group! We’ll pair your child with a small group of kids who are close in age to adventure with. We emphasize social-emotional learning in our sessions, so your child will have plenty of opportunities to get to know peers and make new friends online.

Our games meet weekly for 90 minutes. Most of our sessions are scheduled for weekday afternoons or evenings. The same kids meet every week, so you’ll get to know other players well.

If you already have a group, and just need a DM to guide you, that works too! We offer games for birthday parties, special events, and families who are interested in playing together.
